CHOOSING AND CARING FOR CLOTHING

Judging Quality in Clothes

Jean bought a new blouse that was on sale for $12.00. The first time she washed it, two seams split and a button fell off.

Make sure this doesn’t happen to you. Learn how to choose quality clothes. Here are a few things to look for:

  1. Seams should be smooth and even in width. They should be at least 1/2" wide. They should be stitched firmly and should not pucker.
  2. Buttonholes should be neatly bound. There should be no loose threads. Buttonholes should fit neatly over the button.
  3. Hems should be flat and even.. The stitching should not show on the outside of the clothing.
  4. Patterns or plaids in the material should match at the seams. The pattern should look like it continues evenly.
  5. Snaps, hooks, and buttons should be sewn on well. Zippers should work smoothly and lie flat.
  6. Check the quality of the fabric and the care the clothing will need by reading the label.
  7. Clothes of 100% cotton will shrink when washed unless they are preshrunk. So buy a larger size if you’ll need it. Clothes of a cotton and polyester blend should not shrink or need ironing.
